New Tablo Quad DVR Automatically Skips Commercials for Cord Cutters
Nuvyyo unveils the Tablo Quad DVR, which features a new automatic commercial-skipping technology powered by cloud-based machine learning. The convenient feature is available exclusively to subscribers of the device's guide data service.
Nuvyyo introduces the Tablo Quad, a redesigned four-tuner over-the-air DVR that gives cord cutters a highly requested upgrade. The device accommodates an internal SATA drive and features a groundbreaking automatic commercial-skipping capability that requires no user interaction. Unlike other DVRs that need a manual skip button, this system removes ads entirely on its own during playback.
The commercial-skipping technology relies on a cloud-based hybrid of digital signal processing and machine learning rather than human labor. Tablo licenses this technology from a partner to analyze uploaded recordings and detect ads by identifying filming characteristics like quick cuts. Because of this visual recognition method, the feature performs exceptionally well on scripted shows but struggles slightly with local news broadcasts.
This automatic ad-skipping feature is exclusively available to Tablo users who pay for a subscription to the guide data service. Priced at $4.99 per month, $49.99 per year, or a one-time $149.99 lifetime fee, the subscription also unlocks advanced features like out-of-home streaming. The Tablo Quad hardware itself launches in late Q1 2019 with an MSRP of $199.99.
