Nintendo introduces virtual reality to the Switch console with the upcoming Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. The system uses cardboard accessories that players build themselves, including quirky designs like an elephant mask with a trunk-mounted controller. This approach closely follows Google's old Cardboard concept but applies Nintendo's signature DIY style to the experience.
The main VR kit retails for $79.99 and includes six different projects, while a $39.99 starter kit offers a cheaper entry point. Because the Switch uses a 720p screen split for two eyes, the visual resolution remains incredibly low compared to dedicated systems like PlayStation VR. However, users do not have to strap the console to their face and can play the games without the headset attachment.
Nintendo states that this kit aims to make virtual reality fun and approachable for kids and families rather than pushing serious technological boundaries. The company focuses entirely on lighthearted creations rather than deeply immersive or complex gameplay mechanics. The Labo VR Kit officially launches on April 12.
