Notion Kills Email App as Users Favor AI Agents for Inbox Management
Notion announces it is shutting down Notion Mail on September 22, effectively ending what remains of Skiff's email technology after the company acquired the encrypted email startup in February 2024. The Gmail client, launched in April 2025 and built largely by former Skiff team members, is being discontinued as Notion shifts its focus entirely toward AI-driven inbox management.
The company reveals that more than half of Notion Mail users currently manage their emails without ever opening an inbox, relying instead on Notion's increasingly capable AI agents. Notion states that this shift in user behavior prompts the decision to go all in on agents for handling electronic correspondence, moving away from the traditional email client model that Skiff originally influenced.
Notion assures users that email history remains safely in Gmail, though it urges people to export drafts, scheduled emails, snippets, and auto-label instructions before the September deadline. Existing auto-label rules transfer easily to custom agents, and any Notion agents already managing email continue running without interruption. Organizations using Notion Mail in regulated environments like HIPAA compliance may need to transition earlier than the official shutdown date.
