A massive surge in demand for artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT causes a severe shortage of Nvidia's AI-focused graphics cards. Nvidia reportedly struggles to manufacture enough of its A100 and H100 chips to satisfy the exploding market. The situation is especially critical in China, where the company sells modified A800 and H800 GPUs to comply with U.S. sanctions.
This overwhelming demand leads to drastic price increases of up to 40% above the manufacturer's suggested retail price. The modified A800 chip currently sells for as much as $36,500, while older models like the 2018 V100 still command prices around $10,000. Additionally, Chinese customers face wait times of up to six months as Nvidia prioritizes fulfilling orders from non-Chinese markets.
Although this specific shortage targets enterprise-grade AI hardware rather than consumer gaming GPUs, it still raises concerns for everyday buyers. The main risk is that Nvidia eventually shifts its manufacturing resources away from consumer graphics cards to focus on the highly profitable AI sector. While a crypto-style gaming GPU shortage is not happening at this very moment, the rapid growth of the AI revolution means consumers cannot completely rule out future supply issues.
