Nvidia expands its focus into the robotics sector by preparing to launch a new generation of compact computers for humanoid robots called Jetson Thor in the first half of 2025. This move aligns with the chipmaking giant's years-long strategy to establish itself as a foundational technology provider for the robotics industry.
According to Nvidia's vice president of robotics, Deepu Talla, the company does not intend to compete directly with robot manufacturers like Tesla. Instead, Nvidia positions itself as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that supplies the essential computing hardware to the hundreds of thousands of robot makers worldwide.
This strategic push relies on two major technological breakthroughs: the rapid rise of generative AI models and the ability to train robots using simulated environments. The timing also reflects a proactive business shift as major Nvidia customers like Amazon and Google actively work to reduce their reliance on Nvidia's AI chips by developing in-house alternatives.
