NVIDIA introduces a new family of BlueField-2 data processing units (DPUs) alongside the DOCA software development kit at the GPU Technology Conference. These specialized processors are designed to offload critical networking, storage, and security tasks from traditional CPUs, transforming standard IT infrastructure into fully programmable, AI-enabled data centers. Founder and CEO Jensen Huang emphasizes that the data center is now the fundamental unit of computing, requiring DPUs to function as an essential pillar alongside CPUs and GPUs.
A single BlueField-2 DPU handles the equivalent data center services of up to 125 CPU cores, significantly freeing up processing power for other enterprise applications. By taking over these heavy infrastructure workloads, the new processors allow organizations to implement advanced "zero-trust" security features that actively prevent data breaches and cyberattacks without sacrificing overall system performance.
Major server manufacturers worldwide, including Dell Technologies, Lenovo, and Supermicro, plan to integrate NVIDIA DPUs into their enterprise server offerings. This hardware adoption is backed by strong software support from industry leaders like VMware for its Project Monterey initiative, Red Hat for its enterprise Linux and OpenShift platforms, and Canonical for Ubuntu, ensuring rapid and widespread deployment across global data centers.
