NVIDIA Unveils GR00T Humanoid AI Model and Jetson Thor Chip at GTC 2024
NVIDIA launches Project GR00T, a foundational AI model for humanoid robots, alongside the powerful new Jetson Thor computing platform.
NVIDIA kicks off GTC 2024 with a massive keynote to unveil its latest robotics innovations, highlighting the new Project GR00T foundation model. Designed specifically for humanoid robots, GR00T stands for Generalist Robot 00 Technology and acts as a large multimodal model that bridges the gap between robotics and embodied AI. This platform enables machines to understand natural language and replicate human movements simply by observing them.
To power this advanced software, NVIDIA introduces the Jetson Thor computing platform built on the new NVIDIA Thor system-on-a-chip. The hardware features a next-generation GPU based on the Blackwell architecture, delivering an impressive 800 teraflops of 8-bit floating-point AI performance. It also includes an integrated functional safety processor, a high-performance CPU cluster, and 100GB of Ethernet bandwidth to streamline robot design and integration.
These announcements arrive as the global race to develop commercial humanoid robots rapidly accelerates. Alongside the new chip and model, NVIDIA significantly upgrades its Isaac robotics platform with new generative AI foundation models, simulation tools, and AI workflow infrastructure. CEO Jensen Huang states that these combined technologies equip roboticists worldwide with the tools needed to make giant leaps toward artificial general robotics.
