Nvidia Unveils Grace Arm CPU for High-Performance Data Centers

Nvidia officially enters the server CPU market with "Grace," a custom Arm-based processor designed to accelerate hybrid CPU-GPU workloads. This move marks the company's return to Arm server chips after a decade of technological evolution.

Nvidia officially enters the server processor market by unveiling "Grace," a homegrown Arm-based CPU designed specifically for high-performance data centers. Announced at the GTC 2021 conference by CEO Jensen Huang, this new processor aims to deliver unique differentiation and a compelling value proposition for hybrid CPU-GPU compute complexes.

This announcement represents a return to an idea Nvidia originally explored a decade ago with "Project Denver," which sought to combine beefy CPU and GPU capacity to displace traditional X86 processors. While the Arm ecosystem was too immature for servers back in 2011, the architecture now provides the robust 64-bit processing and memory addressing necessary to make this hybrid approach a reality.

The launch of the Grace CPU comes as Nvidia actively pursues its massive $40 billion acquisition of Arm Holdings. By developing its own custom Arm cores, Nvidia positions itself to tightly integrate its dominant GPU technology with server-class CPUs, creating a powerful new option for large-scale computing environments.
