O2 Unveils AI Granny Chatbot to Waste Phone Scammers' Time
UK carrier O2 launches "dAIsy," an AI chatbot designed to impersonate an elderly woman and keep phone scammers occupied with endless, meandering conversations. The tool aims to protect vulnerable seniors from a growing epidemic of telephone fraud.
UK mobile network operator O2 introduces a new chatbot named "dAIsy" that poses as a chatty elderly woman to frustrate phone scammers. The AI character happily discusses topics like knitting and her cat Fluffy while keeping fraudsters endlessly engaged as they attempt to extract fake bank details. This creative approach turns the tables on scammers by wasting their time instead of allowing them to target real victims.
The system uses a combination of AI models to function seamlessly during live phone calls. It transcribes the scammer's voice into text, processes the input through a custom large language model to formulate a response, and converts that text back into speech. Scambaiting expert Jim Browning, who is well-known for his YouTube videos exposing fraudsters, helps train the AI to handle these interactions realistically.
This initiative targets a massive and growing problem, as the FBI reports that scammers swindle billions of dollars from seniors over the phone each year. With generative AI making voice impersonation easier than ever, these financial losses threaten to balloon even further. By deploying dAIsy to occupy malicious callers, O2 hopes to make a significant dent in the global telephone scam industry.
