Oculus reveals the Rift S, an updated virtual reality headset that arrives this spring for $399. The device features upgraded 1280 x 1440 LCD panels that replace the older OLED screens, providing users with a noticeably sharper visual experience. Despite the resolution bump, the refresh rate drops slightly from 90Hz to 80Hz.
The headset utilizes five tracking cameras for inside-out motion detection, eliminating the need for external sensors. A new Passthrough+ feature allows users to view their real-world surroundings without removing the headset. Additionally, the on-ear headphones give way to integrated near-ear speakers, though users still have the option to plug in their own audio gear.
Lenovo assists with the physical redesign to improve weight distribution, comfort, and light blocking. The Rift S maintains a simple single-cable connection to a compatible PC and includes Touch controllers in the box. Potential buyers can download a tool from Oculus to verify that their computer meets the required system specifications.
