Retail employees at the Apple Store in Penn Square, Oklahoma City vote 56-32 to unionize, becoming the second Apple location in the United States to achieve this milestone. The workers choose the Communications Workers of America (CWA) as their representative to negotiate contracts and advocate for better working conditions. Under National Labor Relations Board rules, Apple currently has five business days to file an objection to the election results before it must officially recognize the new union.
This historic vote occurs amid significant controversy regarding Apple's labor practices at the store. The CWA files an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB, accusing Apple of illegally surveilling, interrogating, and threatening the Oklahoma City employees. CWA officials claim that Apple executives use aggressive anti-union tactics similar to those of other large corporations, but emphasize that these intimidation methods fail to stop determined workers from claiming their power.
Apple maintains that a direct, collaborative relationship with staff is the best approach for both employees and customers.
