The Open Source Initiative (OSI) releases version 1.0 of its Open Source AI Definition (OSAID) to establish a universal standard for open source AI. This new framework results from years of collaboration with both industry and academia and aims to align regulators and developers on a shared understanding. OSI Executive Director Stefano Maffulli emphasizes that this consensus is crucial as regulatory bodies like the European Commission look to give special recognition to open source systems.

Under the OSAID guidelines, an AI model only qualifies as open source if it provides enough information for a person to substantially recreate it. Developers must disclose complete details about training data, including its provenance, processing methods, and licensing. Furthermore, the definition mandates that users have the freedom to employ the model for any purpose, modify it without permission, and build new projects on top of it.

The OSI lacks formal enforcement power to compel companies to follow this new standard. Instead, the organization plans to publicly flag models that falsely use the open source label and relies on the AI community to correct these misnomers. This effort directly challenges the current strategies of major tech companies like Meta, which frequently describe their AI model releases as open source despite not meeting all of these strict transparency requirements.
