OpenAI and Figure Unveil Humanoid Robot Performing Daily Household Tasks

A new partnership between OpenAI and robotics startup Figure produces a humanoid robot that understands speech, identifies objects, and completes chores like handing over food and putting away dishes.

Robotics startup Figure demonstrates a groundbreaking collaboration with OpenAI by showcasing its Figure 01 humanoid robot completing complex household chores. The robot uses an OpenAI-trained vision-language model to process visual data from its onboard cameras, allowing it to understand its surroundings and interact naturally with a human.

In an impressive video demonstration, the robot shows off its ability to hold a conversation while independently analyzing its environment. When asked for something to eat, Figure 01 identifies a red apple as the only edible object available, carefully picks it up, and hands it directly to the human.

The humanoid robot also takes the initiative to perform helpful tasks without direct commands, such as picking up trash and placing dishes into a drying rack. Figure's CEO emphasizes that these actions rely entirely on end-to-end neural networks, meaning the robot operates completely autonomously without any human teleoperation.
