OpenAI Attributes Ongoing ChatGPT Outages to DDoS Attacks
OpenAI confirms that recent ChatGPT outages stem from distributed denial-of-service attacks. The hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan claims responsibility for the disruptions.
OpenAI confirms that ongoing outages affecting ChatGPT and its API result from distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Over the past 24 hours, users encounter error messages stating that something goes wrong while generating responses. The company attributes these service disruptions to abnormal traffic patterns and actively works to mitigate the issue.
A threat actor known as Anonymous Sudan claims responsibility for these DDoS attacks. The group states that the attacks target OpenAI because of perceived bias regarding Israel and Palestine. Anonymous Sudan confirms it uses a botnet called SkyNet to execute these operations.
The attackers leverage Layer 7 DDoS attacks, which target the application level to overwhelm services with massive request volumes. This method severely strains server resources and causes services to hang. Anonymous Sudan previously uses this same Layer 7 technique to disrupt major Microsoft services earlier this year.
