The departure removes a renowned researcher who helps guide OpenAI's approach to AI safety since its founding in 2015. Sutskever frequently clashes with Altman over the pace of AI development, reflecting broader concerns about potential harms if the technology grows without proper constraints. Jan Leike, who co-leads the superalignment team with Sutskever to explore ways to limit AI harm, also resigns from the company.
Sutskever's exit follows a tumultuous period where he initially joins the board to fire Altman, sparking a massive employee revolt before publicly regretting his actions. After Altman's reinstatement in late November, Sutskever largely disappears from public view while the company discusses his continued involvement, ultimately leading to his official departure announced Tuesday.
