OpenAI introduces "Memory with Search," a new feature that allows ChatGPT to use saved details from past conversations to inform web search queries. When a user types a prompt that requires a web search, ChatGPT automatically rewrites the query to include relevant personal information, such as dietary restrictions or location, to deliver more useful results.
This upgrade builds on OpenAI's recent expansion of ChatGPT's memory tool, which now references a user's entire chat history. The feature positions ChatGPT to better compete with rival chatbots like Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini that also offer memory capabilities for a more personalized AI experience.
Users retain full control over this functionality and can disable Memory with Search by turning off the Memory feature entirely in the ChatGPT settings menu. While the feature appears in OpenAI's official documentation and release notes alongside the recent o3 and o4-mini model updates, it currently remains a limited rollout with only some users reporting access.
