OpenAI Cuts Prices in Half With Updated GPT-6 Sol and Luna Models
OpenAI is expanding its GPT-6 generation with updated versions of its smaller Sol and Luna models, following this month's launch of GPT-6 Astra. The company positions Sol as suited for complex tasks like coding, while Luna targets high-volume clerical work such as summarizing documents, extracting information, and answering quick questions. According to OpenAI, the new models extend Astra's capabilities while making that intelligence more efficient and accessible.
OpenAI emphasizes major gains in efficiency and affordability, most notably halving API prices compared to the 5.6 series of Sol and Luna. The company attributes the price drop to improvements in caching and inference. It also claims the new models make about half as many factual mistakes as their predecessors, with Sol reaching Astra-level reliability at much lower cost, and a lower error rate on coding tasks.
The release intensifies the rivalry with Anthropic, whose new Opus 5.5 arrives just 90 minutes before OpenAI's announcement. OpenAI claims Sol and Luna handle tasks substantially better than Anthropic's top models, Fable and Opus. The updated models are now available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts and via the ChatGPT API, while Luna is rolling out to the desktop app and to Free and Go users, with wider availability across the ChatGPT app and website expected throughout the day.
