OpenAI removes the waitlist for its DALL-E 2 text-to-image generator, allowing anyone to sign up and use the service immediately. The platform currently boasts over 1.5 million active users who create more than 2 million images daily, with a large community sharing feedback and creations on Discord.

The company takes an iterative approach to this public deployment due to initial safety concerns and the challenges of scaling such a complex system. Since its early preview in April, DALL-E 2 offers higher resolution and faster generation than the original model, enabling artists and creators to produce surreal or realistic artwork simply by describing their vision in text.

During the closed beta, OpenAI adds powerful features like Inpainting and Outpainting, which allow users to edit specific parts of an image or expand its borders using natural language prompts. The team also implements and strengthens safety guardrails to prevent the creation of violent, sexual, or unauthorized facial imagery based on real-world misuse observed during the testing phase.
