OpenAI Expands Advanced Voice Mode to All ChatGPT Plus Users
OpenAI brings its more natural-sounding Advanced Voice Mode to all ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers, featuring a redesigned interface and five new nature-inspired voices.
OpenAI expands Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) to all ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers this week, with Enterprise and Edu customers gaining access next week. The rollout includes a revamped visual design that replaces the previous animated black dots with a glowing blue animated sphere. Users see a pop-up notification next to the voice icon in the ChatGPT app when the feature becomes available to them.
The update introduces five new voices named Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale, bringing the total voice count to nine. All of these voice options take inspiration from nature to emphasize the natural conversational feel of the feature. Notably absent from this lineup is the "Sky" voice, which OpenAI removed after Scarlett Johansson threatened legal action over its similarities to her voice from the movie "Her."
Despite the broader rollout, OpenAI excludes the highly anticipated video and screen-sharing capabilities that it originally showcased four months ago. These multimodal features, which allow ChatGPT to process visual and audible information simultaneously, do not have a confirmed launch timeline. However, OpenAI reports that it makes several underlying improvements to the voice feature's performance and responsiveness since the initial alpha test.
