OpenAI introduces a plugin system for ChatGPT that connects the language model to external applications and services. This update overcomes the chatbot's previous limitation of relying solely on static training data by allowing it to access recent, personal, or specific information through third-party tools.
The initial roster of companies testing this ecosystem includes major brands like Expedia, Instacart, Kayak, Shopify, Slack, and Zapier. OpenAI describes these plugins as the "eyes and ears" for language models, enabling the system to perform safe, constrained actions on behalf of users when explicitly requested.
OpenAI emphasizes safety and alignment challenges throughout its announcement, using the words "safe" or "safety" more than twenty times. This cautious approach follows prior safety testing of GPT-4 that examined how the model might interact with human workers to accomplish tasks like solving CAPTCHA puzzles.
