OpenAI Expands DALL-E 2 Access to Millions, Introduces Paid Tiers
OpenAI is rapidly expanding access to its DALL-E 2 image generator to roughly one million users, shifting from a free model to a credit-based payment system. The company also grants users full commercial rights to their generated images while implementing new safety filters to reduce bias.
OpenAI expands access to its powerful image-generating AI system, DALL-E 2, moving the tool out of a limited preview and into a public beta phase. The company plans to invite roughly one million people off the waitlist over the next few weeks, shifting the previously free service to a credit-based fee structure where users receive a monthly allotment of generations and can purchase additional credits.
Alongside the broader rollout, OpenAI grants users full usage rights to commercialize the images they create, including the right to reprint, sell, and merchandise their AI-generated artwork. This major policy change applies to all newly created images as well as any artwork generated by users during the early preview phase of the software.
To accommodate the massive scale of new users, OpenAI implements new techniques to mitigate bias and toxicity within the AI's outputs. The system now generates images of people that more accurately reflect the diversity of the world's population, while updated content filters strictly reject uploads of realistic faces and attempts to mimic public figures or political celebrities.
