OpenAI Expands DALL-E 2 Access to Millions With New Pricing and Commercial Rights
OpenAI is rapidly expanding access to its DALL-E 2 image generator to one million users, shifting to a credit-based payment model. The update also introduces improved safety filters and grants users full commercial rights to their generated artwork.
OpenAI is significantly expanding access to DALL-E 2, its powerful AI image generator, with plans to invite roughly one million users off the waitlist in the coming weeks. As part of this beta launch, the system transitions from a completely free model to a credit-based pricing structure. New users receive 50 free credits in their first month and 15 credits in subsequent months, with the option to purchase additional credits in $15 increments.
The broader rollout is made possible by new safety techniques that reduce bias and toxicity in the AI's output. OpenAI now uses methods that ensure DALL-E 2 generates images of people reflecting the world's diversity when prompts do not specify race or gender. Additionally, the system actively rejects uploads of realistic faces and blocks attempts to create likenesses of public figures, celebrities, and politicians.
In a major policy shift, OpenAI grants users full usage rights to commercialize the images they create with DALL-E 2. Users can now reprint, sell, and merchandise their AI-generated artwork, which even applies to images created during the early preview phase. To support the artistic community, OpenAI also offers a subsidy program for artists who need financial assistance to access the platform.
