The free, ad-free application provides a straightforward mobile interface for interacting with the popular AI chatbot, functioning much like a standard messaging app.
Users interact with the app by typing text or using voice input powered by OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition system. The application syncs conversation history with the desktop version, although users cannot disable data sharing for model training without also turning off this chat history feature. Paying ChatGPT Plus subscribers unlock GPT-4 capabilities and faster response times through local in-app purchases.
This international expansion arrives as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman meets with European heads of state to discuss AI regulation. While the app currently remains exclusive to Apple devices, OpenAI promises that an Android version is coming soon to broaden access even further.
