OpenAI Experiences Second Major Service Outage This December

ChatGPT, Sora, and OpenAI's API suffer a four-hour outage caused by an upstream provider. This marks the second significant disruption for the company this month.

ChatGPT, Sora, and OpenAI's developer API experience a major outage that lasts for over four hours on Thursday. OpenAI reports that the disruption begins at 11 a.m. PT and attributes the issue to an unnamed upstream provider. By mid-afternoon, the company confirms that services slowly come back online for users.

During the restoration process, Sora becomes fully operational again by 3:16 p.m. PT, while ChatGPT remains partially recovered. Users continue to face issues loading their chat history as OpenAI actively works on a complete fix for both ChatGPT and the API. Despite the core services going down, popular platforms that rely on OpenAI's API, such as Perplexity and Apple Intelligence, do not appear to be affected.

This incident marks the second time OpenAI's services go down during the month of December. An earlier outage two weeks ago lasted roughly six hours and was blamed on a faulty telemetry service. These recent disruptions last significantly longer than the typical one-to-two-hour outages that users usually experience with the platform.
