OpenAI Forms Math Advisory Group as AI Solves Over 100 Open Problems
OpenAI announces a new Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The group aims to give mathematicians more input into OpenAI's math-oriented research and serve as a bridge between the company and the broader mathematical community. The announcement follows the abrupt publication of an AI-generated solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem.
Alongside the advisory group news, OpenAI claims its internal model has resolved more than 100 additional open problems across most areas of mathematics. The rapid pace of these results draws criticism from prominent mathematicians, including 25 Fields Medal winners who sign an open letter earlier this month arguing that AI labs are threatening their intellectual work as they race to solve famous problems.
The nine-member advisory group will assess the significance of new results and coordinate their release, and while members remain unpaid, they can speak publicly and control their own membership. However, the group holds no power to slow or redirect OpenAI's research, as the company states it will not advise on internal pacing. Notably, only one member, IAS's Camillo De Lellis, also signed the Fields Medalists' letter.
