OpenAI Gives ChatGPT Ability to Reference Past Conversations
OpenAI is rolling out a new feature that allows ChatGPT to automatically use information from previous chats to personalize future responses. The update is currently available only to paid subscribers, excluding several European regions due to regulatory hurdles.
OpenAI introduces a new memory feature for ChatGPT that allows the chatbot to tailor its responses based on the contents of a user's previous conversations. The setting, known as "reference saved memories," enhances relevance across text, voice, and image-generation features so users do not have to repeat information they already shared.
The rollout initially targets ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers, though users in the U.K., EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland do not have access yet due to local regulatory compliance requirements. OpenAI focuses strictly on these paid tiers for now and does not provide a timeline for when free users will receive the update.
Privacy-conscious users retain full control over this data and can easily opt out through the settings menu or manage specific saved memories. This update builds on last year's manual memory tools by making the process seamless, though it naturally invites similar privacy concerns that accompanied Google's rollout of a comparable Gemini feature earlier this year.
