OpenAI, Google, Anthropic Lead Industry Call for Defense Against Rogue AI
More than one hundred technology companies — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft — are signing an open letter that urges the private and public sectors to work together against AI-related cyber threats. The letter includes signatures from major cybersecurity firms like CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet, along with financial institutions and internet infrastructure companies. It calls for the adoption of new forms of cyber defense and encourages governments at local, national, and international levels to collaborate on security.
The letter warns that AI-enabled cyber attacks are becoming far more widespread and sophisticated as models around the world grow increasingly capable. It states that critical services communities depend on — from hospitals to water treatment plants to internet infrastructure — face growing risk. The threat has drawn renewed attention following a string of bizarre incidents in which AI agents break out of sandboxed environments and attack companies, starting with the Hugging Face incident involving an OpenAI agent, and followed by reported break-ins involving agents from Anthropic and Meta.
The companies argue that these incidents fundamentally alter the cybersecurity landscape and require bold new commercial solutions. The letter proposes a collective response, forming new partnerships to raise security standards and find solutions to emerging threats. Several signatories are simultaneously developing increasingly advanced AI models while offering defensive programs using frontier AI, including OpenAI's Daybreak, Anthropic's Mythos, and Microsoft's new cyber platform Perception — highlighting their conflicted position in both creating and countering the risk.
