OpenAI Grants ChatGPT Web Access Through New Plugin System

OpenAI introduces a plugin system for ChatGPT that allows the AI to browse the internet and pull data from third-party sources using Bing's search API. The integration breaks the chatbot's previous knowledge limit, though it introduces known risks regarding unreliable sources and algorithmic biases.

OpenAI expands the capabilities of its popular chatbot ChatGPT by launching a new plugin system that connects the AI directly to the internet. The most notable addition is a first-party web-browsing plugin that uses the Bing search API to pull real-time information from the web, effectively ending the AI's previous limitation of only knowing events up to September 2021. This alpha release is currently available to a small group of developers and ChatGPT Plus subscribers on a waitlist.

By connecting to the live web, ChatGPT now cites the specific websites it visits to formulate its answers, providing transparency about its sources. However, this live access introduces significant safety challenges, as the uncurated nature of the internet differs greatly from static, filtered training datasets. Past experiments with web-connected AI models, including OpenAI's own WebGPT and Meta's BlenderBot 3.0, show that these systems frequently quote unreliable sources, cherry-pick data, and generate offensive or conspiracy-driven content.

The reliance on search engine APIs like Bing also introduces algorithmic biases into the chatbot's responses. Search algorithms prioritize websites using modern web technologies and often favor their own proprietary services over richer third-party sources, giving search engines immense control over the data that informs the AI. Furthermore, this algorithmic approach creates vulnerabilities that bad actors potentially exploit to manipulate the information ChatGPT provides to users.
