OpenAI Holds Off on Sora API as Rivals Push Ahead
OpenAI confirms it currently has no plans to release an API for its Sora video generation model. The delay stems from overwhelming demand that recently forced the company to pause new user sign-ups.
OpenAI currently has no plans to release an API for Sora, its popular AI video generation model. During a recent developer AMA, OpenAI's head of developer experience Romain Huet explicitly states that a Sora API is not on the immediate roadmap, leaving developers waiting for programmatic access to the tool.
The decision likely stems from severe capacity constraints following Sora's launch. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admits that the company significantly underestimated user demand, which forced the temporary closure of Sora sign-ups shortly after release. Although the company recently resumes accepting new users, it clearly struggles to scale the service fast enough to support developer integrations.
This lack of an API puts OpenAI at a competitive disadvantage in the generative video space. Rivals like Google already offer limited API access for its Veo model and plan to expand this to Veo 2 in 2025, while AWS provides an API for its Nova Reel model. Meanwhile, startups like Runway successfully leverage their APIs to generate millions of videos for major consumer tech companies.
