OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Memory to Reduce Repetitive Context
OpenAI gives ChatGPT the ability to remember user details across conversations to eliminate repetitive prompts. Users maintain full control to view, delete, or disable these persistent memories at any time.
OpenAI adds a new memory feature to ChatGPT that allows the AI to remember user details across separate conversations. This update aims to reduce the friction of repeatedly providing context, letting the chatbot learn preferences like how to format meeting notes or details about a user's current job.
Users retain complete control over this new functionality and can explicitly tell ChatGPT what to remember or forget. They can also manage their stored data by navigating to Settings > Personalization > Manage Memory to delete specific items or clear their history entirely, though deleting standard chat logs does not automatically erase associated memories.
OpenAI uses these memories to improve model training for standard users, although individuals can opt out and Enterprise or Team customers are excluded by default. For users who prefer isolated, transactional queries without persistent context, OpenAI recommends using temporary chats that bypass memory and avoid contributing to model training entirely.
