OpenAI Launches Dedicated ChatGPT Desktop App for Windows Users
OpenAI introduces a preview of its official ChatGPT app for Windows, currently limited to paid subscribers. The early release allows users to chat, upload files, and generate images while a complete version arrives later this year.
OpenAI releases a dedicated ChatGPT app for Windows in early preview, giving paid subscribers a new way to access the AI chatbot directly from their desktops. The application is currently available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users as the company prepares a more robust version for later this year. This Windows launch mirrors the company's previous rollout of a desktop app for macOS.
The early Windows client brings several core features to the platform, including the ability to upload files and photos, summarize documents, and generate images through DALL-E 3. Users also get immediate access to OpenAI's newest models, such as the highly capable o1-preview. Additionally, the app includes a handy companion mode that lets users minimize the chat window to a small sidebar while working in other applications.
Despite the exciting launch, this preview version carries a few notable limitations. OpenAI confirms that voice features, including the popular Advanced Voice Mode, are not yet supported in the Windows app. Furthermore, certain integrations with the GPT Store remain non-functional at this stage. The application runs on most Windows 10 machines and promises to evolve significantly as OpenAI refines the experience ahead of its full release.
