OpenAI Launches Dedicated ChatGPT Health Feature for Medical Queries
OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Health, a separate space for users to discuss medical topics without mixing that context into standard chats. The new feature connects with wellness apps but faces scrutiny over AI reliability in healthcare.
OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Health, a dedicated space for users to discuss medical topics separately from their standard chats. Over 230 million people already ask health and wellness questions on the platform each week, and this new feature silos those sensitive conversations so they do not bleed into regular interactions. If users start discussing health outside of this dedicated section, the AI nudges them to switch over to the Health space.
The new feature connects with popular wellness apps like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal to incorporate personal medical records and fitness data. Interestingly, ChatGPT Health allows the AI to reference standard chat history, meaning it remembers if a user asks for a marathon training plan in a regular chat and applies that runner context to health goals. OpenAI promises that it will not use these private health conversations to train its AI models.
Company executives position ChatGPT Health as a solution to healthcare barriers like high costs and overbooked doctors, but relying on AI for medical advice introduces significant risks. Large language models operate by predicting likely responses rather than verifying factual accuracy, making them prone to hallucinations. Furthermore, OpenAI's own terms of service explicitly state that the chatbot is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition, raising questions about the true utility of the tool.
