OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work After Government Approval
OpenAI officially rolls out GPT-5.6 to the public after receiving the Trump administration's greenlight, ending a limited preview period that restricted access to government-approved organizations. CEO Sam Altman calls the new model "the best model we have ever produced." The model suite includes three variants: Sol, Terra, and Luna.
Alongside the GPT-5.6 launch, OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent that combines ChatGPT and Codex into a single tool designed for everyday non-technical users. The agent gathers context from connected apps, files, and workflows to produce finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and web apps. A unified plugins directory connects ChatGPT to services like Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars, and CRMs.
Mac and Windows users worldwide, including free ChatGPT users, receive immediate access through the ChatGPT desktop app. On mobile and web, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users get access first, while Plus and Business users gain access over the following days. OpenAI notes that the global rollout continues gradually toward full availability.
