OpenAI Launches Operator AI Agent to Automate Online Shopping Tasks
OpenAI introduces Operator, an AI agent that actively browses, shops, and orders products on behalf of users. The tool partners with major ecommerce brands like eBay and Instacart to transform the digital shopping experience.
OpenAI debuts Operator, a new artificial intelligence agent designed to handle web-based tasks like browsing, shopping, and ordering products on behalf of users. Unlike traditional chatbots that merely provide answers, Operator acts as an active virtual assistant that clicks, scrolls, and types to complete online tasks with minimal human input. The tool is currently available in an early preview for select U.S. users and represents OpenAI's first official entry into "agentic AI."
To test the technology in real-world scenarios, OpenAI partners with major ecommerce brands including eBay, Instacart, and Etsy. Users simply log into the platform, type a request such as "order groceries" or "find a gift," and Operator launches a virtual cloud browser to execute the command. Shoppers retain full control and can step in at any time to tweak an order or make adjustments to their carts.
The new system runs on OpenAI's specialized Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model, which is trained to understand and interact with graphical user interfaces. This underlying technology allows the AI to "see" websites, click buttons, fill out forms, and navigate menus just like a human shopper. OpenAI states that Operator transforms AI from a passive tool into an active participant, aiming to streamline customer experiences and drive higher conversion rates for online retailers.
