OpenAI Launches Sora Video Generator, Excludes EU at Launch

OpenAI rolls out Sora Turbo to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, allowing them to generate videos up to 20 seconds long using text prompts or images. However, the tool is not available in the EU at launch and operates on a monthly credit system.

OpenAI releases Sora Turbo, its new AI video generator, to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers today, though the tool remains unavailable in the European Union at launch. The current version allows users to create video clips ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in various aspect ratios and resolutions. OpenAI staff acknowledge that the early model is imperfect but believe it significantly boosts human creativity.

The platform includes several editing features such as Re-mix, Storyboard, Blend, Loop, and Re-cut tools that give creators multiple ways to manipulate their content. Users generate videos by spending credits, with costs varying based on the chosen resolution and video length. Lower-resolution 480p clips cost as little as 20 credits, while high-quality 1080p videos require up to 2,000 credits per generation.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers receive 1,000 credits monthly for up to 50 priority videos at 720p resolution, while Pro users get 10,000 credits for up to 500 priority videos at 1080p. These credit balances reset every month without any rollover, and users also have access to slower "relaxed" generation modes. Despite the exciting features, OpenAI experiences major capacity issues as eager users flood the system on launch day.
