OpenAI releases its new o3-mini reasoning model to free ChatGPT users, marking the first time the general public gains access to this advanced technology. Previously, these step-by-step reasoning models remain exclusive to paid Plus and Pro subscribers. This expansion coincides with Microsoft rolling out the older o1 model to its Copilot users.
The o3-mini model utilizes a "chain of thought" technique to work through complex problems methodically, allowing it to catch and correct its own mistakes before delivering a final answer. OpenAI states that this new version responds 24% faster than its predecessor, o1-mini, making it particularly useful for solving PhD-level math problems or handling highly advanced prompts.
Despite being significantly cheaper to operate than previous reasoning models, o3-mini still costs about seven times more to run than standard non-reasoning models like GPT-4o mini. This release arrives shortly after the Chinese company DeepSeek shocks the industry by introducing a highly capable, incredibly cheap reasoning model that challenges OpenAI's market dominance.
