Cryptocurrency scammers compromise OpenAI's official press account on X to promote a fake digital token called $OPENAI. The hacked OpenAI Newsroom account falsely announces that the new blockchain token bridges the gap between artificial intelligence and crypto technology, claiming all users are eligible to claim a portion of the initial supply.
The deceptive post directs unsuspecting users to a phishing site that closely mimics the legitimate OpenAI webpage. Visitors who click the prominent claim button are encouraged to connect their cryptocurrency wallets, which allows the scammers to drain funds and steal login credentials using malicious crypto drainer tools.
This incident represents a recurring security issue for OpenAI, as similar phishing campaigns previously targeted the X accounts of CTO Mira Murati, chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, and researcher Jason Wei. The scammers disable comments on the malicious posts to hide evidence of the hack, and the fraudulent links remain active as OpenAI and X investigate the breach.
