OpenAI Reaches $29 Billion Valuation Amid AI Investment Surge
OpenAI reportedly eyes a $29 billion valuation in a new tender offer led by Thrive Capital and Founders Fund, doubling its 2021 valuation despite a tough venture market.
OpenAI, the organization behind the popular artificial intelligence tools ChatGPT and DALL-E, is reportedly in talks for a tender offer that values the company at $29 billion. Venture firms Thrive Capital and Founders Fund are leading the push to buy shares from existing shareholders, such as employees, which more than doubles the company's $14 billion valuation from its 2021 tender offer.
The San Francisco-based startup currently generates tens of millions of dollars in revenue and aims to reach $1 billion in annual revenue by 2024 by licensing its technology to developers. OpenAI's flagship product, ChatGPT, functions as an artificial general intelligence designed to continually learn and incorporate new knowledge, with the potential to augment or automate a wide range of human tasks.
If this tender offer succeeds, OpenAI solidifies its position as one of the top 20 most valuable private companies in the world during a difficult climate for venture fundraising. This milestone highlights the resilience of the artificial intelligence sector, which sees massive investments despite a general pullback in venture funding, with around $38 billion invested in AI startups worldwide in 2022 alone.
