OpenAI officially launches Sora today as a standalone AI video generator, marking the debut of the highly anticipated tool on its own dedicated website, Sora.com. The platform operates entirely separately from ChatGPT and features a homepage showcasing a curated feed of recently generated videos. Users can easily bookmark these clips into organized folders and inspect the exact text prompts used to create them.
The new platform includes robust creation and editing tools, such as the ability to generate videos from both text prompts and uploaded images. A "Re-mix" feature allows users to modify existing clips by describing desired changes and adjusting a strength setting to control artistic liberties. Additionally, a "Storyboard" function helps users string multiple prompts together to create consistent sequences, directly addressing a common weakness in AI video generation.
Despite these innovative features, Sora currently struggles with typical generative AI flaws, particularly regarding object permanence and anatomical accuracy. YouTuber Marques Brownlee notes in his early review that objects often disappear, reappear illogically, or interact in physically impossible ways. Furthermore, while the tool supports up to 1080p resolution, generating high-quality footage takes significantly longer than lower resolutions, raising concerns about potential wait times once the platform opens to the general public.
