OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Search to Rival Google

OpenAI launches ChatGPT Search, a new feature that provides timely web answers with source attribution. The tool is rolling out to paid users first and will eventually reach free accounts.

OpenAI launches ChatGPT Search, a new feature designed to rival traditional search engines by providing timely answers drawn from online sources. Powered by a fine-tuned version of the GPT-4o model, the tool delivers information like sports scores, news, and stock quotes directly within the ChatGPT interface. Users can either allow the system to automatically search the web based on their prompts or manually trigger a search using a dedicated web search icon.

The new search experience includes clear attribution to news publishers and data sources through in-line and sidebar links. For example, queries about local events pull summaries from regional news outlets, while election-related questions direct users to authoritative sources like the Associated Press and Reuters. OpenAI states it incorporates direct feedback from publishing partners to determine article relevance, summary length, and quoted text to ensure proper credit.

ChatGPT Search is currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users on web and mobile platforms, with enterprise and educational customers gaining access in the coming weeks. Free users will receive the feature after this initial rollout phase. OpenAI also releases a Chrome browser extension to set ChatGPT Search as the default search engine, and plans to integrate the tool into its Advanced Voice Mode and expand its capabilities in shopping and travel.
