OpenAI Shuffles Top Safety Executive Amid Rising Concerns

OpenAI reassigns its head of preparedness to an AI reasoning role just before Democratic senators question the company's safety practices.

OpenAI removes Aleksander Madry from his position as head of preparedness and reassigns him to a new role focused on AI reasoning. Madry previously leads a team responsible for tracking and mitigating catastrophic risks tied to frontier AI models. The company states that he continues to perform core AI safety work in his updated position.

This leadership shuffle occurs just days before a group of Democratic senators sends a letter to CEO Sam Altman regarding OpenAI's safety practices. The lawmakers demand detailed answers about how the startup meets its public safety commitments and handles cybersecurity threats. They require OpenAI to provide this information by August 13.

The restructuring adds to a summer of growing scrutiny for OpenAI as it competes in a fiercely competitive generative AI market. Earlier this month, Microsoft gives up its observer seat on the OpenAI board, expressing satisfaction with the revamped governance structure that followed Altman's brief ouster last year.
