This strategic move provides OpenAI with additional computing capacity to meet heavy user demand, moving away from its previous reliance on Microsoft as its exclusive cloud provider. The partnership marks a significant shift in the relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft, especially since Microsoft officially names OpenAI as a competitor.
Under this new multi-cloud strategy, ChatGPT and its application programming interface utilize Google Cloud Platform alongside existing suppliers Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Oracle. The added Google infrastructure operates across several global regions, including the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. This expansion follows a massive five-year, $12 billion deal with CoreWeave and a previous partnership with Oracle to extend the Microsoft Azure AI platform.
This development represents a major victory for Google, whose cloud unit remains younger and smaller than those of Amazon and Microsoft. Google already hosts cloud infrastructure for Anthropic, a rival AI company founded by former OpenAI executives. As OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman actively seeks massive chunks of GPU capacity to alleviate ongoing constraints, diversifying its cloud providers ensures the startup maintains the robust processing power required for its large language models.
