OpenAI Taps Multimodal AI Proponent Mira Murati as Interim CEO

OpenAI names CTO Mira Murati as its interim leader following the sudden dismissal of Sam Altman. Murati brings extensive hardware and AI experience from Tesla and Leap Motion to her new role.

OpenAI abruptly fires CEO Sam Altman and promotes CTO Mira Murati to the role of interim CEO. Murati brings a diverse engineering and product background to the top position, holding a mechanical engineering degree from Dartmouth College and possessing early career experience at Goldman Sachs and Zodiac Aerospace.

Before joining OpenAI in 2018, Murati spends three years at Tesla as a senior product manager for the Model X during the early rollout of Autopilot. She later serves as VP of product and engineering at Leap Motion, where she focuses on making computer interactions more intuitive before determining that the virtual reality technology is simply too early for mainstream adoption.

As OpenAI's CTO, Murati leads the development of major products like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex, and she now champions multimodal AI as the future of the company. She strongly believes in releasing AI technology to the public to identify flaws and discover practical use cases, ensuring the technology actually solves real-world problems rather than just acting as a novelty.
