OpenAI Targets Families as ChatGPT's User Demographics Shift

OpenAI is expanding its focus beyond individual users to families, hiring a dedicated product manager in San Francisco to build experiences for households, caregivers, and older adults. The job posting calls for expertise in trust-sensitive consumer products, signaling a strategic shift for the company. The move comes as ChatGPT's audience grows older and broader, with the share of users aged 35 and up rising to 31% globally in the second quarter, up from 26% a year earlier, according to Sensor Tower data shared with TechCrunch.

Industry analysts see the hiring as a natural evolution for OpenAI, comparing it to the trajectory of tech giants like Google, Apple, and Meta, which eventually tailored their platforms for family use. Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, notes that OpenAI is beginning to think of its products less as individual productivity tools and more as technology designed for shared household use. However, AI raises the stakes because it functions as an active assistant rather than simply mediating content or controlling devices.

The shift also brings significant trust and safety challenges. Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, describes the hiring as "safety by redesign," reflecting a recognition that products initially built without children in mind need different safeguards. New research from his organization reveals a gap between parental awareness and reality: while 27% of parents say their children used generative AI in the past week, 38% of children report doing so themselves, underscoring the urgency of building age-appropriate protections.
