OpenAI Unveils Faster, Cheaper GPT-4 Turbo With Expanded Context Window
OpenAI introduces GPT-4 Turbo, a more powerful and affordable upgrade to its flagship AI model featuring an extended context window and updated knowledge base.
OpenAI unveils GPT-4 Turbo at its first-ever developer conference, offering a more powerful and less expensive upgrade to its flagship AI model. The new model comes in a text-analyzing version available immediately via API and a version that processes both text and images arriving in the coming weeks. OpenAI optimizes the performance to provide GPT-4 Turbo at a price that is three times cheaper for input tokens and two times cheaper for output tokens compared to the standard GPT-4.
The upgraded model boasts a significantly expanded context window of 128,000 tokens, which is four times larger than the previous version and the largest available in any commercial model. This larger context window allows the AI to consider much more text before generating responses, reducing the likelihood that it forgets earlier parts of a conversation and veers off topic. Additionally, GPT-4 Turbo features an updated knowledge base that extends to April 2023, pushing past the previous September 2021 cutoff to provide more accurate answers about recent events.
OpenAI sets clear pricing for the new system, charging one cent per 1,000 input tokens and three cents per 1,000 output tokens for the text-analyzing model. For the image-processing capabilities, the cost varies depending on the image size, with a standard 1080x1080 pixel image costing roughly $0.00765 to process. Alongside this major model release, OpenAI also launches a new fine-tuning program specifically for GPT-4, giving developers even more tools to customize the AI for their specific needs.
