OpenAI Unveils Ultrafast Mode, Boosting GPT-5.6 Sol to 14x Speed

OpenAI rolls out Ultrafast, a new mode that dramatically accelerates its most powerful model, GPT-5.6 Sol. The company says Ultrafast operates at 14 times the speed of standard processing and delivers up to 750 output tokens per second, marking a major leap in how quickly the chatbot can respond to users.

OpenAI notes that until now, achieving real-time speed typically required choosing a smaller or more specialized model. Ultrafast points to progress in a new direction by delivering more useful work per second. Competitors like Anthropic have introduced similar features, including Claude's fast mode, though OpenAI claims its offering reaches speeds the competition does not match.

The high-speed mode is designed for corporate workflows such as incident response, customer service, financial market analysis, and e-commerce. Ultrafast launches in preview to a small group of customers and is powered by OpenAI's partnership with chipmaker Cerebras, with broader access expected as capacity grows.
