OpenAI's Navier-Stokes Breakthrough Sparks Controversy Among Mathematicians

OpenAI announces that it has discovered a solution to the Navier-Stokes problem, a major mathematical challenge that has remained unsolved for roughly 90 years. The company says it achieved the breakthrough using an internal AI model more powerful than the newly released GPT-6 Astra, along with 10,000 concurrent agents. The Navier-Stokes problem, which relates to the flow of liquid and gas, is one of seven Millennium Prize Problems, each carrying a $1 million reward.

OpenAI says it began training the internal model on August 28th, and that it exhibits unprecedented performance in its benchmarks, including mathematics. The company touts the result as a significant milestone for the mathematics community and a demonstration of AI's growing capabilities in formal reasoning and proof discovery.

The announcement does not come without controversy. Just one day earlier, NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster publishes findings on a related problem in partnership with Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge. Buckmaster says he contacted OpenAI after learning the company had heard about their progress, and he alleges that OpenAI produced its Navier-Stokes proof using a route similar to the one he and Alpöge had been pursuing, raising questions about credit and priority in the race to solve the famous problem.
