Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne Resigns After Controversial Deep State Claims

Overstock founder Patrick Byrne steps down as CEO and board member, admitting his recent comments about government investigations complicate business relationships. The company's stock surges on the news as Jonathan Johnson takes over as interim CEO.

Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne resigns from the e-commerce company he founded 20 years ago after making controversial comments about his involvement in what he calls the "deep state." He steps down from both his CEO and board member positions, stating that his recent public statements about assisting federal agents complicate various business relationships, from insurability to strategic retail discussions.

Overstock shares surge as much as 17 percent following the resignation announcement, recovering some of the 30 percent losses the stock experiences after Byrne initially shares his claims. The company names Jonathan Johnson, a current board member and the president of Overstock's blockchain subsidiary Medici Ventures, to serve as interim CEO.

Byrne also notes in his farewell letter that his departure potentially paves the way for mergers and acquisitions. He expresses confidence that if the right strategic offer reflects the value of the company's technological assets, the board seriously considers the opportunity now that he is no longer at the helm.
