Two early-stage COVID-19 vaccine trials from the University of Oxford and a Wuhan-based research group show highly promising results. Both prospective vaccines successfully generate strong antibody responses against SARS-CoV-2 in healthy adult participants. The available data indicates that these treatments are safe to administer, bringing the global scientific community closer to an effective preventative solution.
The Oxford study tests 1,077 healthy adults between 18 and 55 years old using a randomized control method. Every single participant develops neutralizing antibodies by the end of the vaccine course, which includes a booster dose. While some trial subjects experience mild side effects like fever, chills, and muscle aches, researchers note that none of these reactions are serious and are easily treated with standard over-the-counter painkillers.
Similarly, the Chinese trial involves 508 participants who receive either the vaccine candidate or a placebo and exhibit no adverse reactions. With these safety and efficacy milestones met, both the Oxford and Wuhan research teams now move forward to phase three trials. This final large-scale human testing phase serves as the last major hurdle before potential regulatory approval, production, and distribution of the vaccines.
