Palantir Reveals Financials and Customer Risks in Long-Awaited S-1 Filing

Palantir Technologies officially files its S-1, showing significant 2020 revenue growth alongside narrower net losses. The big data company also highlights its heavy reliance on a small number of massive government and commercial contracts as a major business risk.

Palantir Technologies finally publishes its long-awaited S-1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, giving the public a complete look at the big data company's financial health. The filing shows that Palantir generates $742.6 million in revenue for 2019, which represents a 25 percent increase from the previous year, while its net losses remain relatively flat at around $580 million.

The first half of 2020 tells a more positive financial story, as revenue jumps 49 percent to $481.2 million compared to the same period in 2019. During this same six-month window, the company successfully reduces its net losses by 41 percent, bringing the deficit down to $164.7 million and indicating a potential shift toward long-term profitability.

Despite this improving financial trajectory, the S-1 filing reveals a significant vulnerability regarding Palantir's customer base, which consists of only 125 users in the first half of 2020. The company openly admits that its top three customers account for 28 percent of its 2019 revenue, meaning the sudden loss or non-renewal of just a few massive contracts severely threatens its future results.
